We shape ideas from place, and nurture those who will shape what comes next.

Through local knowledge, critical inquiry, and public expression, we help students and young people understand where they stand, develop ideas that can be examined, and bring their local experience into dialogue with the world.

From the world’s edge, we see what lies ahead for humanity.

TEDxNangan sees Matsu as a place where local knowledge enters global conversation. We translate the experience of living with tension, constraint, and uncertainty at the world’s edge into questions and ideas the world can understand and explore together.

At the same time, we support local students and young people in inheriting, questioning, and reinterpreting this knowledge—so they can begin from where they stand, form perspectives of their own, and bring the next question to the world.

More Than Speakers

Read the Place

A place is more than a backdrop. It is where knowledge takes shape.

Through language, memory, everyday life, and practice, we learn how a place has been shaped by history. and how it has developed its own ways of responding to constraint and change. We must first understand the ground beneath us before we know where to begin.

Identify the Question

From personal experience, we uncover the public questions beneath.

Rather than accept ready-made answers, we ask: How did this problem take shape? Whose voice is missing? What other possibilities remain? We turn what seems ordinary into a question worth confronting together.

Form a Point of View

Through inquiry, experience becomes a claim open to discussion.

We gather evidence, compare experiences, and test assumptions to form our own judgment amid complexity. A point of view is not a declaration of position, but a claim that can be explained, verified, and revised.

Speak to the World

Translate local knowledge into a language the world can understand.

We articulate an idea clearly, offer evidence to support it, and submit it to the scrutiny of other perspectives. We do not claim to speak for an entire place; we bring local experience into an equal dialogue with the world.

About TEDx

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized. (Subject to certain rules and regulations.)

About TED

TED is a nonprofit organization devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Started as a four-day conference in California 30 years ago, TED has grown to support its mission with multiple initiatives. The two annual TED Conferences invite the world’s leading thinkers and doers to speak for 18 minutes or less. Many of these talks are then made available, free, at TED.com. TED speakers have included Bill Gates, Jane Goodall, Elizabeth Gilbert, Sir Richard Branson, Nandan Nilekani, Philippe Starck, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Sal Khan and Daniel Kahneman.

The annual TED Conference takes place each spring in Vancouver, British Columbia. TED’s media initiatives include TED.com, where new TED Talks are posted daily; TED Translators, which provides subtitles and interactive transcripts as well as translations from volunteers worldwide; the educational initiative TED-Ed. TED has established The Audacious Project that takes a collaborative approach to funding ideas with the potential to create change at thrilling scale; TEDx, which supports individuals or groups in hosting local, self- organized TED-style events around the world, and the TED Fellows program, helping world-changing innovators from around the globe to amplify the impact of their remarkable projects and activities.

Curatorial and organizational leadership

TEDxNangan is developed through three complementary practices rooted in Matsu. Ming-Chun Hsieh, Licensee & Lead Organizer, designs the organizational and intergenerational learning system. Chiang, Lin, Curator & Strategy Lead, shapes the questions, narrative architecture and curatorial journey. Liu Chia-Kuo, Local Co-organizer & Community Lead, grounds the platform in local knowledge and civic dialogue. Together, their work in architecture, education, place-based cultural practice and community life informs this platform. TEDxNangan remains an independently organized TEDx event.

The mission statement on this page and the four-step "More Than Speakers" method were developed and are carried out by TEDxNangan founders Chiang, Lin and Ming-Chun Hsieh, Liu Chia-Kuo.
